A Poem, following my recent post on Ageing Gratefully…

My Favourite Things – not
Rising each morning at silly o’clock, rousing the children... walk dogs round the block. Crawling through rush hour towards an office, These, in retirement, are things I don’t miss. Each weekday evening, arrive home from work. Look neither to left nor right where dust may lurk. Shopping at weekends – remember the list. These are a few of the things I don’t miss. When the wrists hurt When the knees twinge When the hips feel bad, I simply remember the things I don’t miss And then I don’t feel so sad. Having to work on the days sun is shining. Rain at the weekends and shirts that need ironing. Home in the dark when long winters persist. These are a few of the things I don’t miss. Roast every Sunday with others to feed. Make-up and work suits and wristwatch to heed. Hungover Mondays from Sunday’s release, These are the things I don’t miss in the least. When my wrists hurt When my knees twinge When the hip pain’s bad, I simply remember the things I don’t miss And then I can still feel glad.

What don’t you miss about your former life?

Brilliant poem Cathy, I found myself singing this to a well known tune. They are certainly things I don’t miss. I have my alarm set early most days to take medication but oh what a pleasure it is to then snuggle back down under the covers and luxuriate in those I don’t have to get up yet moments. Heaven.

Yep – that’s the song!
Unfortunately, my husband seems to interpret those don’t-have-to-get-up-yet moments as don’t-have-to-get-up.

I love this, Cathy! The refrain is so clever.
Well, I’m not an Edgar Allen Poe – it (see what I did there?), but I can say that most things in my life I don’t miss. I’ve never thought about any moment in my past and wished to relive any of them. Most of my memories I have are not good.
Obviously if I listed them all, my computer would run out of ink, or I’d have to pay WordPress for extra storage! 😀

Its strange how its always the embarrassing or regretted moments that come back to me, more than the good ones.

Please take a look at my very talented friend’s blog. She lives across the pond and of whom I am very fond. 🙂

Wonderful words put to a very familiar tune. I was singing right along. I don’t miss looking for a parking place near my college! Once it moved away from the bus route I had to drive there.

I’ve been humming it all day… I sympathise about the bus routes. There are hardly any buses serving our local town and they’re planning to cut those. So much for saving the environment by reducing traffic!

Of course the fewer the buses the fewer the riders the fewer the buses and so on.

Loved it. My life is so different now, living on my own, that I haven’t thought too much about what I don’t miss. It’s absolutely wonderful being only responsible for myself and being able to stay in bed as long as I like and even not getting dressed. Being a teenager, such as I never was allowed, but my kids excelled at (staying in bed and pj bit) I miss having dogs, but don’t miss the early morning walks and cleaning up after them, and vet visits and the cost. Only doing laundry for one and hardly any ironing is wonderful. Although I do miss a roast, the last one I had was at Christmas, but vegetarian these days. I don’t miss meat.

I look on the dog walks more favourably now than when I had to get up at 5.30am to fit everything in before work. And since my hip started disintegrating I’ve seen the walks as therapy. The hip feels better at the end of the walk than at the beginning, so it must be doing some good.
