Another Poetry Challenge

Below is the verse I posted as my March contribution to the 12 poems in 12 months challenge at https://12shortstories.com/.

Although I am no poet (as you can tell), I am enjoying this uncompetitive creative exercise. Comments are still being posted on April’s challenge, which was to write a sonnet. While feeback remains 100% encouraging, it is becoming more specific and developmental. I suspect we’re all feeling a bit braver – about the value of our feedback as well as our efforts.

All kinds of rhyme are welcomed, from doggerel through traditional poetic forms to blank verse. It’s free to sign up to the challenge; the only return expected is to comment on three other poems posted that month.

The prompt for March was Red. The verse below was my contribution.

A Study in Red

My masterpiece, complete, twice edited

and printed out in pristine black and white,

is taken up with reverence from the printer.

I’ll scan once more to check that all is right,

then send it off. Oops, there’s a missing ‘s’,

conspicuous by its absence. What a pain!

Where’s the red pen? Perhaps that longish sentence

doesn’t sound quite right

– re-word again?

There’ll surely be much better words than ‘much’

for that last phrase, and does this word exist?

Should it?

I’m not sure about this comma… look it up.

See, here’s a full-stop missed.

My masterpiece is black and white and red,

with crimson spiders crawling west to east.

Back to the laptop. Change, expand, erase.

Repair and print out one more time – at least.

See – you don’t have to be a poet to join in.

Writing challenges give me motivation and inspiration to exercise my creative muscles.

  1. good info!
i made 3 videos in the past, when i had a previous blog called “untitledpress”.
during that time, i wanted to include songs that i enjoyed listening to, but i could not find a video of them with their lyrics in english.
so thats how u had ended up making those 3 videos, just to put english song lyrics on a screen.
one of those songs is in my “firey sauces and batty dishes” post.
    great job on your video!
    👍🙆
